Hair is Sex

Arthur knew at a young age that he was a natural at coiffure. His mother was his first ‘client’ and she, and later her many friends and neighbors, were a proving ground for what would become his life’s work.

Once Arthur decided hair was to be his profession, he studied in his native Ohio, then New York, Los Angeles, London and Paris. He didn’t just focus on the basics of hairdressing, he wanted to do it all. This led him to an exploration and mastery of wig making, expertise in what were then called “hairpieces” and once he was enmeshed in the fashion and entertainment arenas - all manner of ‘hair enhancement’ for women and men.

Adir Abergel in Allure  Feb 10, 2017:

"...I met this talented human named Arthur Johns. He was one of the most well-known hairstylists in Los Angeles. He was doing everyone from Olivia Newton-John to Chaka Khan to Julie Christie. I assisted him for almost seven years. So I was shaped by all of these incredible women at a very young age. In the salon, Nancy Reagan and Betsy Bloomingdale were coming in, and Zsa Zsa Gabor and Tina Turner. They taught me everything about my craft and about making women feel beautiful and honoring them. And Arthur was a genius and really taught me how to do what I love, which is hair. He could take two hairs and make them into a sculpture."

The highlights of Arthur Johns' career read like a who’s who in fashion, movies, TV and music. Boldface names that have benefitted from his magic touch include Farrah Fawcett, Julie Christie, Liza Minelli, Olivia Newton John, and Diane Carroll. Oh, and Rod Stewart and The Bee Gees.

Arthur created some of the most iconic, and imitated, hairstyles ever – The Divine Miss M, Bette Midler’s permed red bob, Jennifer Beals’ springy curls in FlashDance, Carrie Fisher’s Princess Leah ‘buns’ in Star Wars, and who can forget Tina Turner’s signature mane while wailing ‘What’s Love Got to Do with It’?

Sally Hershberger in 'W' in April 2007:

“I never planned to be a hairdresser. When I was younger, at my mother’s urging, I set out to look for a job. A friend recommended I go to a beauty school and work with the famous hairdresser – Arthur Johns — which I did."

Arthur also nurtured many talented hair professionals, most notably Adir Abergel and Sally Hershberger both of whom enjoy their own celebrity clientele, successful product lines and mane empires – and credit Arthur, not only for giving them a start in the business, but with inspiration and their admiration.

"When it comes to hair - there's nothing Arthur Johns doesn't do exceptionally well. He's a wigmaker, colorist, he makes bespoke extensions, his cuts are iconic. I'm so lucky I had a chance to work with him and learn from him as I began my career. He's brilliant - the consummate hair professional." - Sally Hershberger

Arthur Johns’ career has spanned decades, coifing the elite in fashion and entertainment, all the while maintaining a large, loyal private clientele. Combining his skill set in hairpieces, wig-making and hairdressing – Arthur invented and patented his ‘crowning glory’ - the HairOn® “hair delivery system.”

HairOn is unlike anything else in the hair extension arena. It’s simple to use, non-invasive, and anyone who wants ‘more hair’ can easily ‘adorn’ themselves at home. It’s revolutionary.
